Dice il regista Aki Kaurismaki che il tratto tipico del carattere dei finlandesi, l’unico che sopravvive in tempi di omologazione culturale imperante, è il loro irriducibile humour nero. Se ci fosse bisogno di una conferma, eccola: è nei disegni della sua giovane connazionale Pauliina Mäkelä. Nei suoi mondi alla rovescia, tratteggiati a matita e carboncino, bambini, fantasmi e strane creature si affollano con tutta la forza perturbante delle fiabe. Un Pierino Porcospino dalle lunghissime unghie guarda da lontano una bambina che dorme. Un uomo-albero stritola con le sue radici una geometrica casetta. Serpenti e spettri spuntano in trasparenza nei sogni di un’altra piccola dormiente. E sott’acqua, tra le meduse, si aggira una creatura che sembra il Babau del famoso racconto di Dino Buzzati.
È un mondo popolato di freaks e creature ibride, quello di Pauliina. Tra ghiacci e betulle coperte di neve, tra alberi e prati di funghi spunta un centauro e piccoli fantasmi escono dal terreno. L’artista si diverte a mescolare l’umano, l’animale, il vegetale. E con ciò il disegno ci regala una sottile inquietudine: ci chiede di mettere in discussione identità e sicurezze, allude a una sensazione di continua metamorfosi e ad una natura segreta che prende il sopravvento su razionalità e cultura. Con la matita Pauliina Mäkelä apre una porta e ci invita ad entrare nel suo personale Carnevale. Ad abbandonarci alla musica del segno, con la stessa estasi della sua bambina che in una sequenza di tre tavole suona il tamburo. C’è innocenza ed esperienza, nello sguardo di quella bambina. Noi la guardiamo, lei non guarda noi: i suoi occhi sono puntati altrove. Immersi nel rumore bianco della musica e del disegno.

The Finnish film director,Aki Kaurismaki, says that a typical Finnish trait, the only one to survive in these times of prevailing cultural homogenisation, is their implacable black sense of humour. If it needed confirmation, here it is: it is in the designs of his young compatriot, Pauliina Mäkelä. Her upside down world, outlined in pencil and charcoal, is filled with children, ghosts and strange creatures having all the unsettling energy of fairy tales. A Harry Hedgehog with the longest fingernails watches a sleeping baby. A tree-man crushes a cottage between his roots. Snakes and spectres appear transparently in the dreams of a sleeper. And under water, among the jelly fish, moves a creature that seems like Babau from Dino Buzzati's famous tale. Pauliina's world is a world peopled by freaks and hybrid creatures. Among ice and birch trees covered in snow, among trees and fields covered with mushrooms appears a centaur and little ghosts come up out of the ground. The artist has fun mixing up humans, animals and vegetables. and with this her drawing treats us to a slight uneasiness: she asks us to put identity and certainty up for discussion, alluding to a continuous sensation of metamorphosis and to a secret nature which gets the upper hand over rationality and culture. With her pencil, Pauliina Mäkelä opens a door and invites us to enter into her personal Carnevale. To abbandon ourselves to the music of signs, with the same ecstacy of her child who in a sequence of three drawings is playing a drum. There is innocence and experience, in the eyes of the child. We watch her, she isn't watching us: her eyes are looking elsewhere. Immersed in the white sound of the music and drawing.

Pauliina Mäkelä è nata nel 1980 e si è diplomata nel 2005 presso l'Istituto di Design di Lathi, in questi anni ha preso parte attivamente alla vivace ed innovativa scena artistica finlandese legata al fumetto e all'editoria, contribuendo con i suoi disegni all'emergere di realtà autoprodotte come "Kuti Kuti" e "Napa". Attualmente vive e lavora a Helsinki.


Pauliina Mäkelä was born in 1980 in Hämeenlinna and she received her diploma from the Lathi Institute of Design in 2005. In the last few years she has actively taken part in the lively and innovative Finnish art scene linked to comics and publishing, contributing with her designs to the new self produced works like "Kuti Kuti" and "Napa". She lives and works in Helsinki.
